CoPt nanoparticle superstructures were prepared by utilizing a peptide-based method nanostructure synthesis and assembly method developed in our group. A cobalt/platinum-binding peptide conjugate BP-PEPCoPt (BP = C12H9CO, PEPCoPt = HYPTLPLGSSTY) was synthesized and employed to direct the simultaneous synthesis and assembly of hollow CoPt nanospheres. Close examination of the TEM images indicated that, with dark edges and light interiors, the nanoparticle spheres (diameter = 76.2 � 0.7 nm) consist of individual CoPt nanoparticles (diameter = 3.3 � 0.03 nm). We showed that we could link the CoPt paramagnetic nanospherical superstructures together by applying an external magnetic field. These methods of assembling paramagnetic nanostructures may be useful for controlling the assembly of nanoparticles on multiple length scales and creating new materials with properties that depend on not only the composition of the nanoparticles but also their assembly.
