Among the methods top rpeare metallic supported nanoparticles, water-in-oil- microemulsions have proved to very versatile and simple. We have recently reported the preparation of TiO2 supported Pd nanoparticles of particle size lower than 2 nm. These materials were very active and selective catalysts for the low temeprature (303-353 K) conversion of methenol into methyl formate. This compound is a valuable intermediate in the production formamide, dimethylformsmide, insecticides, pharamaceuticals and as a replacement for environmentally harmful compounds. A series of bimetallic TiO2 supported Pd-Pt nanoparticles was prepared by two different preparation methods. Both types of meterials exhibited unprecedented synergy in the low temperature (T=273 K) reaction of methanol to methyl formate as a function of the Pd to Pt atomic ratio.
