Precipitation of cobalt ion by hydroxide ion gave cobalt hydroxide and water (the conjugate acid of the base). In the pressence of silica, the product was cobalt silicate. Cobalt ion precipitation by carbonate ion as a base, in the presence of silica, usually yielded cobalt carbonates. However, conditions are described, when cobalt silicate was the product. This finding supports the assumption, that cobalt hydroxide and carbonic acids were intermediates. The chemistry and mechanism of inorganic ion precipitations is discussed in light of these results. Our current work is directed toward defining the scope and limitations of these mechanistic paths.
