Intermediate temperature (500-800 oC) solid oxide fuel cells (ITSOFCs) have been a research focus in recent years. Samarium doped ceria (SDC)�carbonate composite electrolyte (CCE) is used in ITSOFCs with H2 or carbon as the fuels. Very good outputs for hydrogen fuel cell, 1700 mW/cm2 at 650 oC,  and direct carbon fuel cell, 100 mW/cm2 at 700 oC, are obtained. H2 and O2 pump methods and techniques of measuring the fuel cell reaction products have been employed to reveal The mechanism of the ionic conduction in the electrolyte and a scheme is proposed. Moreover, a solid oxide fuel cell with an all-perovskite configuration is built for direct utilization of methanol and methane for power generation. Intermediate temperature operation has been realized and very good power outputs are also obtained. With this configuration, no coking reaction is measured.
