MnO2 is a low cost earth-abundant material with applications in a number of energy technologies. MnO2 structured in porous alumina membranes is shown to be nanoporous in nature. The electrodeposited materials can be utilised as oxygen reduction catalysts when dispersed on high surface area carbon for passive direct borohydride fuel cells. The use of MnO2 obviates the need for an ion selective membrane in such cells being inactive to borohydride oxidation whereas alternative oxygen reduction catalysts such as Pt are also effective borohydride catalysts and cells with that catalyst therefore require membrane separators. Well adhered vertically aligned MnO2 may also be deposited and used without further post-treatment in flow cells or sealed storage units such as Li battery applications. The materials were characterised using XRD, SEM/EDX and electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry, chronopotentiometry and in assembled micro direct borohydride fuel cells.
