Two strategies for improving reaing, writing and critical thinking in science students are presented. The first, a student run science journal where students have the opportunity to write, illustrate, edit and publish articles on science. Google Docs is used as a tool to facilitate the editing process here. The second strategy involves groups of students constructing a Google doc comprising their responses to a set of questions based upon a short article relating to a real world application of chemistry. The assigned questions range from low level practice to high level real world application questions. Student work and responses to survey questions are presented to show the effectives of the strategy in terms of building a context to think about chemistry and development of higher order thinking skills.
