The Division of Chemical Education sponsored symposia on Chemistry and Science Fiction at the 203rd ACS National Meeting in 1992 and the 214th ACS National meeting in 1997. The latter symposium resulted in publication of the book Chemistry and Science Fiction, edited by Jack H. Stocker, in 1999.  I incorporated the use of science fiction in my non-major chemistry classes Science and Society and, later, Chemistry and Society, starting in 1993.  In these courses, I focus on short stories rather than novels, with some references to motion pictures and television shows, to present a wide view of science as incorporated into fiction.  My goal has been increased science literacy, rather than an in-depth examination of the science in the individual readings. Students are required to write a short science fiction story as part of their assessment for this portion of the course.   This paper will present some of the bibliographies used in the course, a reading list of the short stories utilized, and some links to Internet sites on the study of science fiction, ideas and inventions of science fiction writers, and teaching resources.
