Human adenoviruses are particularly resistant to several water disinfection technologies. Photocatalysis using highly efficient nano-photocatalysts may be an effective approach for virus disinfection. This research investigates the inactivation of human adenovirus 2 (Ad2) and a common surrogate virus, bacteriophage MS2, by TiO2 and modified TiO2 nanomaterials. The effect of catalyst concentration, light intensity and temperature on the inactivation kinetics is studied. The inactivation efficiency is compared to that of low pressure UV disinfection. Although Ad2 is inactivated at relatively high efficiency, its inactivation rates were several times lower than those of MS2. Such difference in inactivation rates is attributed to differences in virus adsorption onto the catalyst and the structure of the protein capsid. SDS-PAGE assays, protein immunoblotting, ELISAs, and PCR methods are used to investigate specific damage sites to elucidate how differences in structure lead to differences in inactivation kinetics.
