The kinetic method plot analyzer was used to compare the performance of two capillary octadecyl columns (a 15cm x 0.3 mm ID fused-core and a 15 cm x 0.2 mm ID monolith) in isocratic-elution liquid chromatography using a micro-liquid chromatography system and heptanophenone was chosen as a test compound. The (u0, H) couple obtained with column permeability Kv0 was transferred into a (N,t0) couple and the kinetic plots were achieved by using the the u0,opt and Hmin values determined from the van Deemter curve and were found to be almost identical, whereas the Nopt (the plate number for which the support achieves its best analysis time/pressure ratio), Nmax (the maximum plate number that can ever be reached with a support), and topt (the time needed to obtain Nopt plates) performance values were determined from the kinetic plots were found to be significantly different.
