Synthetic iron porphyrins are primary candidates as catalysts for activation of dioxygen. The convenience of the Cu(I) catalyzed 1,3-cycloaddition has been utilized to synthesize artificial iron porphyrin catalysts. One often requires decoratingthese iron catalysts with residues that introduce additional functions e.g.chirality, redox. Normally these catalysts are synthesized using �picket fence�porphyrin approach which entails use of acid chlorides to attach these groups.This limits the scope of the functional groups that can be attached to theporphyrin. Using �click� reaction several porphyrins have been synthesizedwhich are functionalized with ferrocence, alcohol and carboxylic acid groups.The ferrocence functionalized iron porphyrin catalyst is an excellent selectiveO2 reducing catalyst. It reduces O2 to O2- in non-polar solvents and to H2O in aqueous medium . The selectivity is governed by the reduction potential of the 2nd sphere ferrocene residues which depends on the polarity of the medium.
