Artificial photosynthesis is currently being investigated as an attractive solution to growing energy demands and environmental concerns.  In this work we report the synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical behavior of metal-centered assemblies designed for the purpose of photon-driven water oxidation.  These systems consist of a ruthenium based polypyridyl complex designed to harvest light and mediate electron transfer events to provide the necessary redox equivalents to a water oxidation catalyst.  The catalysts in these systems range from known ruthenium catalysts to new iron-centered polypyridyl complexes which are shown to oxidize water.
