Recent synthetic work has opened a new route to make P2N2 ligands whose metal complexes contain pendant amines in the second coordination sphere. Such complexes have been shown to electrochemically catalyze hydrogen production and oxidation, oxygen reduction, and formate reduction. Improved control of the phosphine substituent allows for better control of the electrocatalytic properties of the complexes.
