Air quality models rely on a quantitative understanding of the reaction pathways and rates of oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). Their reactions are critical in determining the yield of harmful oxidized VOCs (OVOCs) and the generation of secondary organic aerosols. Many biogenic VOCs (BVOCs) such as isoprene are unsaturated and their chemistry in the atmosphere is complex; the reaction mechanisms and rates are poorly characterized. Peroxy radicals are key intermediates, formed following initial attack by reactive free radicals such as Cl, NO3 and OH. We have performed laboratory studies in which we directly detect peroxy radical intermediates in the initial steps of BVOC oxidation using NIR cavity ringdown spectroscopy. We have observed radicals formed from a series of alkene and dienes. These experiments allow us to determine rates of elementary reaction steps and identify pathways and yields of these important reactions.
