Recently increasing concerns arise for antibiotics because they have been widely detected in soil, sediment and aquatic environment. This study investigated the adsorption behavior of tetracycline, a typical antibiotics widely used in livestock, onto nature clay minerals: goethite(a-FeOOH), kaolinite, and montmorillonite. The adsorptions were investigated using batch adsorption experiments as a function of pH and ionic strength at 25� C. The interference of background cations(Li+, Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+) and heavy metal cation(Cu2+) and soil humic acid(HA) onto the adsorption were also studied. Results showed that tetracycline adsorbed onto goethite through a specific inner-sphere complexes. For kaolinite and montmorillonite, results suggested an outer-sphere complexes formed between tetracycline and mineral surfaces. The presence of Cu2+ greatly enhanced the adsorption. The presence of HA decreased the sorption of tetracycline especially under acidic to neutral condition.
