A modified porous and template-free carbon nitride compound, structurally related to graphitic phase of carbon nitride (g-C3N4), has been synthesized. For the template free material the amount of barbituric acid, applied as a catalyst precursor, was varied. The impregnation of the carbon nitride with the organic dyes Eosin Y and Safranine O was achieved by adsorption in aqueous solution. The XRD pattern indicates that increasing the amount of barbituric acid the generation of the graphitic structure is disturbed by the additional carbon functionality. Also the thermal treatment in an air flow interfere the formation of the graphitic polymer. Thus, the dye modified materials are expected to enhance the harvest of visible light and increase the evolution of hydrogen from photocatalytic water splitting.
