Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) is a carbon-neutral, environmentally-friendly, and renewable power source. Macro-scale MFCs have been used at waste water facilities and remote sensors. Miniaturizing MFCs is attractive because power density enhance as scaling down dimensions as reaction kinetics, mass transfer, and surface-to-volume ratio improve . Prior art on meso-scale MFCs demonstrate the scaling effect; power density of mesoscale MFCs is significantly higher than that of macro-scale MFCs. However micro-scale MFCs have marked their power densities to be substantially lower than macro-scale MFCs. This work studies the current limitations of micro-scale MFCs and how to mitigate the limitations to improve the power density of micro-scale MFCs.
