Array based sensing, i.e. the �chemical nose� has been applied to a wide range of analytes ranging from small molecules to proteins in buffer. In our research we have used nanoparticles non-covalently conjugated to polymers and biopolymers, extending this �chemical nose� methodology to new targets in biosensing. In one example, we have demonstrated the capability of this system to discriminate between both species and strain of bacteria. More recently we have applied this methodology to mammalian cells to differentiate between healthy, cancerous and metastatic cell lines. This talk will discuss the fundamentals of array-based sensing and the application of this methodology in new and challenging biosensing applications.
