Experimental time resolution at the 'impulsive' limit relative to the time scales for motion along collective and molecular degrees of freedom opened new windows for observation of structural and chemical dynamics. Capabilities for shaping of optical fields with the same time resolution provided new levers for control over collective and molecular degrees of freedom and the structural and chemical changes that involve them. An overview of the capabilities demonstrated thus far will be followed by discussion of recent results that illustrate some of the prospects currently under development and anticipated in the near future.
