We present the first report of catalytic wateroxidation by a fully organic compound, N(5)-ethylflavinium ion, Et-Fl+.Cyclic voltammograms of Et-Fl+ in aqueous acetonitrile solutionsexhibit catalytic peak at +1.9 V vs. NHE . Evolution of oxygen was detectedduring bulk electrolysis of aqueous Et-Fl+ solutions at severalpotentials above +1.9 V. Intermediary H2O2 formation wasnot observed during rotating ring-disc electrode (RRDE) experiments. Based onthe currents observed in RRDE experiments, we estimate the lower limit forcatalytic turnover number to be TN~13. Using UV/VIS spectroelectrochemicalexperiments, we identified 4a-hydroxyflavin pseudobase radical cation Et-FlOH+as the first intermediate in the catalytic cycle.
