Efficient avenues for post-polymerization surface modification are of interest due to ever expanding applications for advanced functional polymeric surfaces possessing precisely engineered properties.  Among several surface functionalization strategies recently developed, those involving robust and efficient �click� reactions are particularly attractive for orthogonal and site-selective immobilization of functional moieties. Our current efforts seek to elucidate thiol-mediated reactions from one single �universal� polymer brush.  By providing pendant thiol functionality directly along the polymer brush backbone, a multitude of robust, efficient chemistries can be explored as a way to rapidly modify surface properties.  With the help of photolabile protecting groups, novel pendant thiol containing polymer brushes were synthesized through SI-ATRP and subsequent coupling reactions to afford �universal� polymer brushes susceptible to a plethora of thiol-mediated reactions directly from the surface.
