The analysis of motion in biological and inorganic systems is of great current interest. For some systems, optical microscopic techniques are not suitable because of their small size (nanometer scale objects). Diffusion Ordered Spectroscopy (DOSY) allows for analysis of diffusion coefficients without any modification of the analyte. We have applied this technique to analyze the diffusion of organometallic catalyst with and without the addition of substrate. In the presence of substrate the diffusion of Grubbs' 2nd generation catalyst is 2.5 times greater than without substrate, making this one of the smallest molecules to exhibit self-powered enhanced diffusion. The catalyst was also analyzed in the presence of a substrate gradient using microfluidic techniques to investigate enhanced spreading.
