1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BzMIM][Cl]) was prepared with N-methylimidazole and benzyl chloride as raw materials. The purity of [BzMIM][Cl] was more than 99.60 %. IR and 1H NMR was used to characterize its structure. Viscosity and density data of [BzMIM][Cl] plus dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) binary mixtures were measured using Ubbelohde capillary viscometer and pycnometer from 313.15 K to 353.15 K. The excess molar volume, the deviations in viscosity, the apparent molar volume and excess Gibbs energy of activation of viscous flow were calculated from experimental data. The calculated values were fitted with Redlich-Kister and Polynomial equation. The results showed the density and viscosity increases with increasing mole fractions of [BzMIM][Cl] at constant temperature, the viscosity and density of [BzMIM][Cl] + DMSO decreases with increasing temperature at fixed mole fractions of [BzMIM][Cl]. The excess molar volumes and the deviations in viscosity were negative over the whole mole fraction range.
