Cross-conjugated molecules have been proposed for use as bridging molecules in donor-bridge-acceptor devices.  The conjugated molecules proposed for use in molecular electronics are typically long-chain molecules which are difficult to study photophysically due to complications arising from their length.  Cross-conjugated 2,3-diphenylbutadiene derivatives are simplified, short-chain model molecules that provide a nice starting point for studying structure and function.  Femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy in the visible region of the spectrum will be used to determine the charge separation and recombination rates of intramolecular charge transfer by observing the changes in the excited-state spectra with time.  Knowledge of the electronic processes and associated geometries that occur in these molecules will provide much needed information on intramolecular charge transfer characteristics and will benefit the rational design of molecular electronics.
