Water solubility in organic extraction solvents, such as tri-n-butylphosphate (TPB) and di-n-butyl carbitol (DBC), was determined from 17O nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. Mixed solvent systems, such as TBP / 70% dodecane, were also investigated. The solubility of 17O-enriched water was measured at multiple temperatures (20-50 oC) as it diffused into a known volume of solvent giving rise to a resonance at -11 ppm. The water concentration data as a function of time for H217O in the organic phases were modeled by the Langmuir function. The best fit parameters were used to estimate the apparent equilibrium solubilities and diffusion coefficients of H217O in each of the solvents. The measured water solubility for each solvent system agrees with literature values and those independently obtained from Karl-Fischer titrations.
