Single molecule/particle spectroscopic (SMS/SPS) studies of CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots and poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MEH-PPV) molecules on TiO2 is presented. Both CdSe/ZnS core/shell QDs and single MEH-PPV molecules exhibit typical fluorescence 'blinking' behavior which is sensitive to the substrate used; on TiO2 both fluorophores exhibit shifts to shorter 'on' state durations and longer 'off' state durations as compared to measurements on glass. These distributions are found to exhibit power law behavior, which is indicative of a high variation in 'dark' state creation/annihilation kinetics. It is hypothesized that the observed substrate sensitivity is due to electron transfer from the excited states of the individual fluorophores to the conduction band or surface defect states of TiO2.
