We will present recent results, which demonstrate that stable carbenes can activate small inorganic molecules (H2, NH3 and P4), spilt enthalpically strong bonds (SiH, P-H, B-H), and stabilize highly reactive intermediates, especially main group elements in the zero oxidation state and paramagnetic species. These two tasks were previously exclusive for transition metal complexes. In addition, the catalytic activity of transition metal complexes bearing novel types of stable carbenes, namely mesoionic carbenes, will be discussed.
