Titanium is the primary choice for dental implants currently. It is thought that adding a coating to the titanium surface increases osteoblast proliferation. In this project, a sodium hydroxide etch will be used to increase the hydrophilicity of the titanium growth surface in order to stimulate mouse osteoblast cell proliferation. Titanium samples will be placed in a sodium hydroxide etch, surface hydrophilicity will be quantified, and a growth assay will be performed. Cells will then be stained for imaging and quantification. The poster will report data on cell attachment as a factor of hydrophilicity, processes of controlling hydrophilicity, and measurements of cell surface hydrophilicity and correlating cell counts.
