In neurodegenerative Alzheimer's disease (AD), the extracellular aggregation of beta-amyloid protein into senile plaques, and the intracellular aggregation of hyper-phosphorylated tau protein into neurofibrillary tangles in the hippocampus and neocortex are prominent pathological features. In these areas of the brain prone to AD protein accumulation, elevated levels of the endogenous metals zinc, copper and iron as well as variations in micro-RNA (miRNA) levels have also been found.  In order to better understand the relationship between elevated metal-ion level, altered miRNA levels and aberrant protein aggregation in Alzheimer's Disease, we have investigated the regulation of tau hyperphosphorylation and amyloid-beta precursor protein expression in neuronal cells by treatment with various metal-ion and altered miRNA levels.
