The rice cultivar Oryza sativa ssp. japonica cv. M202(Sub1) (tolerant) offers a significant advantage over the commercially grown M202 (intolerant) cultivar because it has been shown to have a greater resistance to both submergence and drought.  The presence of a single gene, SUB1A, is known to confer tolerance to both of these stresses.  Recently, we have reported the metabolic reconfiguration in response to submergence due to the presence or absence of SUB1A, however, the metabolic differences in response to drought has not yet been elucidated.  Experiments were performed comparing the metabolome of the tolerant and intolerant rice varieties at the end of 4 days of drought and after 1 day of recovery.  Additionally, a comparison of the metabolic similarities and differences of the drought and submergence response has provided deeper insights into the unique roles of SUB1A.
