The following project involved obtaining omental cells from mice and treating them with various media to differentiate them into lung epithelium-like cells.  The project centered on a sorted magnetic bead culture.  The sorting protocol for this culture helped to separate the three different subpopulations of omentum of interest to this project.  The main focus of the study was to confirm that that CD45-/CD34+ subpopulation of omental cells differentiates into lung epithelium-like cells, whereas CD45-/CD34- and CD45+ subpopulations do not have the ability to withstand the lung differentiation protocol.  To demonstrate that the CD45-/CD34+ cells differentiate, weekly cell counts for 32 days.  The hypothesis was that if the CD45-/CD34+ subpopulation has stem cell properties (i.e. plasticity), as shown in previous studies, then they would differentiate into lung epithelium-like cells.  Overall, the cell counts revealed that the CD45-/CD34+ subpopulation does differentiate into lung epithelium-like cells.
