Heat shock proteins facilitate the folding and unfolding of proteins when a cell undergoes stress.  Previous research has shown that sulforaphane (SFN), an organo-sulfur compound and a bioactive dietary compound found in cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, elevates the expression of heat shock proteins (hsp) 60, 70, 90 and 27 in skin cancer lines. However, it is not known if SFN modulates hsp in colon cancer. Our hypothesis is that SFN elevates levels of heat shock proteins in colon cancer cell lines. Our preliminary data suggest that 50 �M SFN elevates hsp 60, 70, 90, and 27 in HCT116 colon cancer cells under serum-free conditions treated for 24 hours. We will expand these studies to another colon cancer cell line, HT29, and determine the concentration and time response for SFN on hsp expression.
