SBA-15 supported NixPy hydrotreating catalysts with different Ni/P ratios were prepared by TPR method. The major active phases in the resulted catalysts were Ni2P and Ni12P5 when Ni/P ratio varies from 0.5 to 2 respectively. NixPy/SBA-15 shows higher CO chemisorption than NiMo/SBA-15 catalysts indicating the higher dispersion of former species on SBA-15 support. Catalytic activity study was done by using LGO as feed stock which shows higher activity in NixPy/SBA-15 catalyst than NiMo/SBA-15 catalyst. The higher activity of NixPy/SBA-15 catalyst is due to the structure and surface chemical properties of this phase which is resistance to sulfur poisoning. It was also found that the Ni/P ratio had a profound effect on the active structure and hydroprocessing behavior of the NixPy/SBA-15 catalysts. NixPy/SBA-15 (0.5) or Ni2P/SBA-15 catalyst showed higher HDS and HDN activities compared with NixPy/SBA-15 (2.0) catalyst.
