It will be presented that the Sonogashira reaction can be performed on gold  on CeO2 catalysts. The molecular reaction mechanism has been studied by means of quantum chemical calculations, kinetic and spectroscopic studies.In the reaction between Iodobenzene (IB) and Phenylalkyne (PA) it has been found the IB adsorbs and dissociate on Auo and this does not require, an oxidative addition to occur, as it is the case with homogeneous catalysts. The PA can be activated either on Auo or on Au+d. However, the activation energy for the coupling of the adsorbed benzene and PA is lower with PA activated in Au+d. Kinetic experiments are not able to differentiate about the two adsorption models, and the above mechanism was disclosed by preparing samples with different ratio of Auo/ Au+d.
