The catalytic conversion of synthesis gas derived from coal, natural gas or renewable biomass is among the most promising routes to produce alternative energy carriers and chemical feedstocks. Although production of diesel fuel and methanol from syngas has been well-developed on a world scale, there is still a growing need for the direct synthesis of mixed alcohols. When properly promoted by alkali metals, molybdenum carbide is considered to be a promising catalyst for higher alcohol synthesis from syngas. However, the importance of catalyst nanostructure, the influence of surface passivation and the role of the promoter are unclear. This study utilizes X-ray absorption spectroscopy, electron microscopy and diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy to characterize the atomic structure and CO adsorption characteristics of Rb-promoted nanoparticles of Mo2C supported on MgO and Al2O3, which demonstrate high selectivity towards higher alcohols during CO hydrogenation.
