In the last two decades N-heterocyclic carbenes have emerged as a powerful class of carbon-based ligands. Compared to phosphorus-containing ligands, NHCs tend to bind more strongly to metal centers, avoiding the necessity for the use of excess ligand in catalytic reactions. Herein, the synthesis and structural characterization of a new class of fluorophore tagged N-heterocyclic carbenes will be reported.  Interest in the development of these compounds has arisen due to their potential application in catalysis and in fluorescent devices.
