The search for materials with desired magnetic and electrical properties concomitantly relies on the discovery of new systems. To unequivocally determine the compounds' innate properties, large single crystals must be grown and characterized. In this talk, several Ln-M-X (Ln = lanthanide, M = transition metals, X = metalloids) intermetallics with a fine balance of competing states and compounds with magnetic fluctuations leading to novel magnetism will be presented. The challenges of phase stability, single crystal growth, structure determination, and physics of these materials will be discussed.
