The hydrodeoxygenation 4-methylphenol was performed at 623 K and 4.4 MPa over high surface area Ni2P and MoP prepared with citric acid (CA) and calcined from 773-973 K. Ni2P-CA calcined at 773 K had the highest initial rate of deoxygenation at 0.75 mmol.min-1.g-1, an initial TOF of 0.34 s-1, and a surface area of 104 m2/g. MoP-CA calcined at 823 K had an initial rate of 0.28 mmol.min-1.g-1, an initial TOF of 0.079 s-1, and  a surface area of 112 m2/g. Ni2P was found to be more active than MoP, however, after a 5 h reaction the rate of deoxygenation over all Ni2P catalysts decreased. Ni2P-CA calcined at 773 K had a reduced deoxygenation rate of 0.18 mmol.min-1.g-1 after the 5 h reaction due to 3 wt% carbon deposition on the catalyst surface. This deactivation and coking phenomenon was not observed over the MoP catalysts.
