Hydrogen from (bio)carbohydrates by aqueous phase reforming (APR) is highly attractive to overcome energy and environmental concerns. In this study, APR of ethylene glycol is performed in a catalytically washcoated microchannel. Dynamic and static coating techniques are compared and tuned to optimize the washcoat properties, with special focus on the homogeneity of the layer. The static method was eventually used to generate a homogeneous 7 �m layer of 0.82% Pt/Al2O3 on the inner wall of a (320 �m ID, 1m long) fused silica microchannel, the performance of which was tested for APR of ethylene glycol. TOF and H2 efficiency obtained in microreactor system greatly exceed those achieved by conventional system, therefore becoming a highly attractive alternative for H2 production via APR.
