The Passaic River is a primary source of drinking water for over a million people. It drains the Great Swamp Watershed, a fifty-five square-mile region in Morris and Somerset Counties in New Jersey. The water was routinely monitored for turbidity, dissolved oxygen, nitrates, phosphates, pH, and chlorine. In addition, the level of E.coli and Coliforms were followed. The air and water temperatures were recorded together with the flow rate of the river. By collecting and monitoring the water along its path, students have learned how to carry out chemical analyses and conduct a research project. They have also learned how different activities can impact the quality of the water.
