Neutron activation analysis (NAA) is a powerful radiochemical technique for the analysis of nanomaterials in a wide variety of matrices. In the majority of applications, the sample or system is transparent to both the neutron probe and the gamma-ray analytical signal. We are currently developing a system of lanthanide phosphate based nanoparticles for use as tagging and tracking agents. The composition of the nanoparticles can be varied to provide a unique signature that can be rapidly and precisely measured in the field via neutron activation analysis. Likewise, we are using NAA as a rapid, inexpensive technique for determining the biodistribution of therapeutic gold nanoparticle systems. Results from both applications will be presented.
