Verdazyl radicals are unique amongst stable free radicals for two reasons. First they carry three potentially variable substituents to give a variety of different structures. Second, the nitrogen atoms which carry the bulk of the spin density can coordinate metal ions giving very strong magnetic exchange (> 300 cm�1) and the potential to form self assembled metal-organic structures with long range magnetic order. Furthermore recent studies indicate that verdazyls are capable of valence tautomerization, resulting in species with complex and unusual electronic structure. We report studies on the control of sign and magnitude of magnetic exchange using pyridyl substituted verdazyl coordination compounds; in particular we will discuss coordination compounds with iron, cobalt, nickel and copper.
