Though required for normal function, elevated levels of copper have been associated with various neurodegenerative disorders. It is therefore necessary to both monitor and maintain appropriate levels within the environment to minimize such complications. However, monitoring this metal remains a challenging task due to its low concentrations and paramagnetic behavior. In an effort to reduce fluorescence quenching in the presence of copper, we have shown separation of metal recognition and fluorescence transduction within thermal responsive pNIPAM to be a viable approach towards ratiometric sensing. Herein we report the syntheses of several polypyridyl ligands to be incorporated within our polymer scaffold, as well as their pKa and log Kf values for a variety of metal complexes.
