Cisplatin, one of the first metal-based drugs approved by the FDA for cancer therapy, has marginal selectivity for cancerous cells over healthy cells.  To improve targeting of tumors, light activated inorganic complexes that are only cytotoxic when irradiated have been developed.   In the present work, two new photoactive dirhodium complexes, cis-H,T-[Rh2(HNOCCH3)2(CH3CN)6]2+ and cis-H,H-[Rh2(HNOCCH3)2(CH3CN)6]2+, were synthesized and characterized by mass spectrometry, single-crystal x-ray diffraction, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis.   The electronic absorption, electrochemistry and photochemistry of the complexes was also investigated.  Gel electrophoresis experiments show that low energy irradiation (? = 610 nm) produced active complexes that were able to bind to linearized DNA.   These two complexes have higher photolysis quantum yields than previous studied dirhodium complexes and TD-DFT calculations were utilized to help explain the observed reactivity.
