Recent interest in the idea of redox noninnocent ligands has resulted in the challenging assignment of oxidation states of certain metal complexes possessing this type of ligand. Our group is currently exploring the redox noninnocence of the pyridylpyrrolide ligand class, which currently has not been viewed as redox active by others. This ligand is of interest because it possesses a high lying p system of the pyrrolide that is susceptible to oxidation, allowing one to obtain unusually high oxidation states for particular metal complexes. This talk will discuss the efforts to electrochemically and chemically oxidize a series of pyridylpyrrolide-metal complexes containing Fe, Co, and Ni. Attempts to assign ligand and metal oxidation states will be elucidated using a variety of experimental and theoretical techniques.
