Iron(II) complexes of Me2EBC (Me2EBC = 4,11-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazabicyclo [6.6.2]hexadecane) has been investigated as catalyst for the oxidation of olefins  to model the action of Rieske dioxygenases that catalyze arene cis-dihydroxylation and contain a mononuclear iron active site that contains two cis labile sites. This is in contrast to a structurally similar complex FeII(TMC) (TMC = 1,4,8,11-tetramethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) that contains trans labile sites but shows NO cis-dihydroxylation reactivity. Our current efforts are aimed at: (1) to illustrate the importance of cis labile sites; (2) to systematically study the reactivity and mechanism of this complex.
