The frequent occurrence of algal blooms in drinking water reservoirs causes problems to water supply, one of which is the remaining of algal cells after conventional treatment contributes to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs). Pre-oxidation by potassium permanganate (KMnO4) has been widely applied as an effective method to enhance the coagulation process of algal cells. This study investigated KMnO4 pre-oxidation on the control of the algal cells (Microcysis aeruginosa), and the formation of the regulated DBPs and some emerging DBPs (i.e., nitrogenous DBPs) in algal cells-containing water. KMnO4 pre-oxidation enhanced the coagulation process to remove the algal cells without damaging the algal cells severely. The pre-oxidation also controlled the formation of both the regulated DBPs and some nitrogenous DBPs from the chlorination of water after coagulation-sedimentation. The water matrices such as pH and hardness ions affected the pre-oxidation process. The mechanisms contributing to the effective control were also studied and will be presented.
