Phosphorus (P) loss from agricultural soil has been identifed as a major non-point  factor affecting water quality in streams, rivers and lakes through its effect on eutrophication processes. Research has shown that redox status plays improtant roles in P bioavailability as Fe(II)-P speices are more soluble than Fe(III)-P species. Thus, identifying and quantifying reducible P species are improtant issues in environmental P chemsitry. This paper presents data on the effect of Fe ions on the enzymatic hydrolysis of organic P, using phytate as a model compound, in the absence and presence of the reducing reagent dithionite. The dithiointe reduction was then used to release insoluble Fe-P species in poultry litter, dairy manure, and biosolids. The identities of these Fe-P species were characterized by enzymatic hydrolysis, solution and solid state P-31  NMR analysis, respectviely. Determination of these redox senstivie Fe-P in these oraganic wastes improved the knowledge on the behaviors, mobility, and availabilty of organic wastes-relevant P in the environment.
