In order to mitigate environmental concerns associated with carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, it is important to identify potential candidates for CO2 sequestration. It has been argued that clays may be utilized to sequester CO2 at shallower depths and/or in backfilled decommissioned coal mines. We used TGA, DMA, and FT-IR techniques to evaluate the potential of storing CO2 in montmorillonite clay. The thermomechanical behavior of the as-received clay was compared to that of vacuum-dried and CO2 pressurized (10.35 MPa) clays. A peak at 50oC in the tan d curve, which was attributed to the emission of CO2, was observed for the pressurized clay. The TGA results support this evidence, showing a substantial weight loss occurred at 50oC, which was not replicated by non-pressurized samples. Furthermore, FT-IR results demonstrate no carbonate formation in the pressurized clay, indicating little potential for long term CO2 storage.
