The chemical looping process utilizes the redox reactions of metal oxides to convert carbonaceous fuels into separate streams of product such as heat and H2 and sequesteration-ready CO2. The chemical looping process that developed at Ohio State University uses iron-based oxygen carrier particle- to convert carboneous fuels into energy carriers with in-situ CO2 capture. There are two different strategies extensively studied to convert coal via chemical looping process. First process scheme is the Syngas Chemical Looping (SCL) process uses syngas from the coal gasifiers to produce H2. The SCL process was demonstrated in the sub-pilot scale (25kWth) system with the oxygen carriers. The second scheme is to directly convert coal with iron-based particles. Preliminary experiments were conducted to prove the concept of direct conversion of solid fuels using the oxygen carrier particles. The sub-pilot unit for solid fuel conversion was also designed and constructed at the Ohio State University.
