This presentation intends to give an overview of the different strategies which can be proposed for post combustion carbon capture. Scientific and technological challenges will be addressed, with a particular emphasis on different membrane processes.In a first step, intensified gas-liquid absorption through membrane contactors, which make use of microporous hydrophobic highly permeable materials, will be discussed. Material challenges and technological bottlenecks in a real flue gas environment will be more specifically detailed. Target material characteristics (thickness, permeability, hydrophobicity) will be quantitatively anlysed.The state of the art of gas separation membranes, mostly based on polymeric materials, will next be exposed. The major targets of the capture process in terms of selectivity, energy requirement and productivity will be reviewed and compared to the key materials performances (CO2/N2 selectivity / permeance).In the last part, alternative process strategies such as liquid membrane approaches based on ionic liquids will be presented.
